DownMark Browser Extension - Frequently Asked Questions

Everything about using DownMark Safari and Chrome extension for web to markdown conversion, knowledge management, and content extraction

Which websites can DownMark convert to Markdown?

DownMark browser extension supports most websites including news sites, blogs, technical documentation, academic papers, research articles, and more. Our intelligent algorithm recognizes diverse web page structures to accurately extract main content and convert to markdown format for offline reading and knowledge management.

How is the quality of extracted Markdown files?

DownMark uses advanced web scraping algorithms to precisely convert HTML to markdown while maintaining original text structure, heading hierarchy, paragraphs, lists, links, and code blocks. Generated markdown files are clean, readable, and compatible with any markdown editor like Obsidian, Notion, or VS Code for knowledge management workflows.

Do I need to login or register an account?

No account registration is required. Safari conversion and Markdown file saving happen on your Mac. When using Chrome, content passes through a secure temporary relay that is automatically deleted within minutes. Anonymous usage analytics and crash diagnostics are handled by our service providers per our privacy policy.

I installed DownMark, but I can't find some settings. Where are they?

Some DownMark settings are located in the browser extension, while others are located in the DownMark Mac application.

If you're looking for settings such as:

• Save location
• Wrap Markdown and images into an enclosed folder

please open the DownMark Mac application and click Preferences.

Settings related to:

• HTML → Markdown conversion
• Compatibility options
• Content extraction behavior

are available in the browser extension settings.

Why are they separated?

DownMark actually consists of two parts:

• The browser extension extracts webpage content and converts it into Markdown
• The Mac app saves and manages the generated Markdown files

Because Safari extensions, Chrome extensions, and macOS apps each store settings separately (and Chrome cannot access app preferences), these settings currently live in different places.

We know this isn't immediately obvious, and we'll continue improving the wording inside the app and documentation to make this easier to discover.

What file formats does DownMark support for saving web content?

DownMark saves extracted web content in standard Markdown (.md) format - the ideal format for knowledge management, note-taking, and offline reading. Markdown files work seamlessly with Obsidian, Notion, VS Code, and any other markdown editor or knowledge base application.

How does it handle pages that require login?

DownMark can extract content from web pages you have already logged into in your browser. Since the extension runs in your browser environment, it can access page content that you have already authenticated.

Is there a file size limit?

There are no strict file size limits. DownMark can handle articles of various lengths, from short blog posts to long technical documents. Processing time may vary depending on content length.

Are there any differences in keyboard shortcuts?

The Safari version has a fixed keyboard shortcut: ⌘⇧M. The Chrome version does not include a built-in shortcut because Chrome already uses this key combination. However, Chrome natively supports custom shortcuts for extensions. You can set a personalized shortcut for DownMark in Chrome's extensions shortcuts page (chrome://extensions/shortcuts).

How is DownMark for Mac different from DownMark for iOS?

DownMark for Mac saves Markdown files directly to your Mac from Safari or Chrome. DownMark for iOS keeps converted results inside the iPhone and iPad app for preview, read-later use, iCloud sync, and export. They are separate apps and purchases. Learn about DownMark for iOS.
